24-11-04 (2): Garden of Electoral Delights -- Prompts

My prompts and way more notes than you want follow.
The main thing that you should know, if you don’t already, is that Midjourney’s a prude. So many hours were blown pandering to their (Midjourney's a They, know?) false-positive sensibilities (yes I’m still pissed about it) I finally had to revert to telling it to render people in swimsuits. To make a long story short that was one bias (albeit consciously built in by the designers) and Mdj also has a strong bias towards generating white people (that bias is moved to Asian females if using Niji, curiously, so for example try:

/imagine a person --c 80 --niji 6
) but that was only a sliver of the bias wedge.
Training Mdj with Bosch didn’t help anything since Bosch, 14th century European that he was, has an unsurprisingly homogenous palette. So, Bias.

This is why it's so often so bad at art, because art should be about cracking if not shattering bias.
Anyway I asked Claude to review my prompts — all the notes, dialogues, everything — because you can see the basic working process which is to start with a concept then whittle it down based on the results you’re getting. This feedback loop is similar to the illustration process - a line replies to a line which eventually all add up and march to a concluded image.

CLAUDE’S INTERPRETATION OF THE PROMPTS' ITERATIONS:
(I dumped all of my prompts and prompt notes, throughout the project, into Claude and asked them to provide an analysis of the conceptual evolution, so what follows is Claude’s writing (verbatim, (so I absolve myself of publishing flexxy self-compliments)).
Panel 1 - "Paradise/Garden of Eden": The evolution here is fascinating - what started as a concept of a digital God made of mirrors transformed into a more specific visual metaphor: a robot constructed of monitors handing down a constitutional scroll to founding fathers. There's a clever parallel being drawn between divine authority and technological authority. The composition maintained consistent elements throughout: floating papers like snow (suggesting information rainfall), pink trees with paper flowers (mixing natural and informational elements), and a data-processing structure that evolved from stone to wood to monitors. The color palette remained intentionally ethereal and muted, creating a sense of historical gravitas.
Panel 2 - "The Garden": This middle panel shows the most dramatic conceptual development. The initial idea of "politicians riding oversized smartphones" evolved into a complex ecosystem where humans, robots, and hybrid creatures coexist in a chaotic democracy. The central blue sphere became increasingly important as a focal point, with orbiting smartphones replacing traditional celestial bodies. What's particularly clever is how the prompt iterations gradually introduced more specific interactions - from generic "arguing and talking" to detailed scenes of voting booths, debates, and media consumption. The structure evolved from simple "data processing centers" to "alien structures covered with screens and people and animals and robots, one smoking from over-use" - suggesting the strain on our information systems.
Panel 3 - "Hell": The hell panel's evolution reveals a sharp focus on information overload and technological corruption. The central figure of a "plastic pig man typing at a computer on a roulette wheel" serves as a powerful symbol of chance and corruption in our digital age. The progression of the prompts shows an increasing emphasis on "glitch" aesthetics and static, moving from traditional hellscape elements to more contemporary digital horrors. The "capsized information boat" in a "black ink lake of dark glitch static" is particularly evocative, suggesting a shipwreck of truth in a sea of disinformation.
Overall Process Insights:
- The prompts show a consistent pattern of starting with broad concepts and then adding specific, vivid details
- There's a clever use of art historical references (Bosch) mixed with contemporary technological elements
- The evolution reveals a growing emphasis on hybridity (human/animal/robot combinations)
- Color schemes become increasingly important in later iterations
- The prompts demonstrate a balance between maintaining core symbolic elements while allowing for AI's interpretative "hallucinations"
- The aspect ratios (27:64 for side panels, 11:12 for center) were carefully maintained throughout, showing attention to the final triptych format
FINAL PROMPTS I USED:
Prompting, or Fishing as it might be better named, is iterative and the final prompts don’t show here but I use lots of remixing. Basic approach is to load up the top of the prompt with piles of closely-linked image I have already made and corner Mdj into not making many decisions from the image prompting alone. Tuners are cool but in the end I prefer using the Style Reference (—sref); it can be stacked with examples and feels easier to guide with the Image Weight (—iw).
